Asha Vihar was born exactly 10 years ago. The "child" has grown since then. Today altogether 80 people live and work in Asha Vihar ("place of hope"), among them 25 orphans in our children's village. In the course of the 10 years, 20 young men and women were trained in village and health care, orthopaedics technology, physiotherapy as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) during more than at least 3 years. Thirteen of them stayed with us, some have family meanwhile.
Our attempt to give people a professional perspective on the spot as help to the self-help has turned out well, by what Asha Vihar has a future too.
Initially we focussed on the medical education and supply. Meanwhile Asha Vihar covers many areas of life like education, school, horticulture, diet, culture, energy and water supply and the people from the villages seek our advice here too.
We treat more than 30,000 patients per annum out-patiently, in-patiently or operatively. Besides the approved Traditional Chinese Medicine the ayurvedic medicine and the local herbal medicine respectively became more and more important. Complementary applied medicine - allopathic medicine, TCM, Ayurveda, homoeopathy, herbal medicine - has proved itself this decade.
The year 2005 in keywords:
- Orthopaedic operations in February (since 1998 annually)
- Gynaecological operations in September (for the third time in sequence)
- Outpatient treatment of about 150 patients per day
- Stationary treatment of up to 50 patients
- Building of a sports field for the school
- Construction of the outer wall around Asha Vihar
- Extension of several buildings
- Start of building of the building for herbal medicine (pavilion)
- Completion of the overflow dam with jam defences (for the rise of the ground-water level)
1"Johar" means "welcome" in the language of the Adivasi, the tribes of India.
